Preschool

The QSI Haiphong preschool program is designed to make learning fun and exciting, all while preparing students to transition to the kindergarten class.

The QSI Preschool uses Frog Street by Frog Street Press, Inc., a research-based, developmentally appropriate program that integrates the education of a preschool child through multiple domains with the special focus on social-emotional development, differentiated instruction and joyful learning through sensory experiences. The domains for each themed unit include: Language/Literacy, Mathematics, Science/Social Studies/Health, Gross Motor Development, Fine Motor Development, Fine Arts, Social/Emotional Development, and Independence/Self-help.

Each daily lesson plan is divided into different sections: Greeting Circle, Literacy Time, Math/Science Time, Center Time, Closing Circle, Home School Connection. 

Greeting Circle – Introduces children to a weekly theme's topic through Morning Message 

Literacy Time/Math/Science – Uses small group activities to teach key concepts through Read-Aloud activities and centers. STEAM activities combine various disciplines to develop mathematical and scientific foundations.  

Closing Circle – reflects upon and reviews the activities from the day.  

Home School Connection – develops and supports partnership with parents.  

Preschool students learn and play in purpose built classrooms in a wing of the QSI Elementary Building. Our youngest students enjoy lunch delivered to their classrooms, a playground built for small hands and feet, and a student-teacher ratio of 5:1.

Preschool students enjoy weekly activities beyond the classroom as well. Every week, students visit the library to check-out books to take home. Students also participate in physical education, art, and music lessons throughout the week.

Throughout the year, preschool students put on two performances for families in the winter and the spring. These are opportunities for the QSI community to gather and cheer on the youngest among us.

1. All children attending preschool must be toilet trained. 

• Diapers & pull-ups are not allowed.  

• What does this mean?  That children must do the following consistently: 

• Recognize when they need to use the toilet. 

• Ask to go to the toilet or seek to go to the toilet on their own. 

• Be able to manipulate clothing to help assist in using the toilet. 

• Be able to use the toilet. 

We recognize that accidents will happen, and we are prepared for that.  We also understand that small children don’t have the fine motor skills to perfectly manipulate buttons, snaps, and zippers.  We can assist children with those, also.  However, children are expected to be out of diapers/pull-ups when in this program.  Children, of appropriate age (see #4), unaware that they have to use the toilet will not be accepted in the program or will be asked to join the program when these skills are mastered. 

2. Children must be able to feed themselves.  Children should be able to use basic utensils to eat their lunches and snacks when required.  We can still open bottles and assist children with their lunch needs, however, we do not feed children at lunch time or snack.

3. Children must demonstrate the willingness and ability to focus on teacher instruction, on the adults in the building, and on a task for short periods of time. The period of time varies depending on the task. However, children at this age can do a task for up to 10 minutes at a time. Children who have a lack of focus may not be ready to sit in our program for short periods of instruction. Our program combines play with academics. However, young children not ready for a school program may not want to or be able to sit and focus on any task.
